On my first day at the junior high I got to overlook the student’s video announcements. There are a few rules of who can be in the announcements and what the student has to do to be in the announcements. First, the student must be in 8th grade. All students have to submit a short essay on why they want to be on the announcements, and how they would be good at it. Along with this they also have to be ok with giving up their SLT time which is a built-in study hall at the end of the day. Their SLT lasts for about the length of a normal class period – 40 minutes.
The students who got accepted to be in the announcements then have to manage the camera, teleprompter, or get to be the reporters. Mr. Uebbing who runs the announcements uses his prep period 7th period to write the script and get everything ready to do the announcements. Every day, he looks up what goofy national holiday it is and uses that holiday to create puns and jokes throughout the announcements. Mr. Uebbing gives his time because he thinks that running the announcements is a fun break from his day and that he gets to spend his SLT doing something fun with students who chose to be there rather than run an SLT with students who have to be there. He uses his prep to write the script and SLT to film announcements. Usually, he doesn’t have anything to edit and he can send it out by the end of the day, but if not, he will take around 10 minutes to edit it.
